Alfie Pugh

Composer & Arranger

Alfie Pugh (b.1989) was born in Exeter, Devon. He received piano lessons from age 6, drum lessons from age 8 and bassoon lessons from age 14. In 2001, he was introduced to Sibelius notation software and began to compose short, simple pieces and wrote arrangements of anything and everything he liked, particularly video game music. Alfie's interest in composing and arranging has grown from there and he now writes for several professional ensembles, university groups and County Youth ensembles.

Alfie has experience in writing for many types of ensemble and in different styles. He has written and arranged over 100 pieces of music including pieces for:

Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Band, Big Band, Jazz Quintet, String Quartet, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Ensemble, Piano Solo, Piano Duet, Choir, Solo Instrument/Voice+Piano, School Orchestra, Pit Orchestra and various other mixed ensembles.

In March 2011, Alfie won the Charities Philharmonia composition competition with his piece, Vasilisa The Beautiful. The competition was run in association with the charity Dreams Come True and Classic FM. Full details here.

Alfie is currently in his 3rd and final year of studying for a BA (Hons) in Music at Bath Spa University, where he has made a name for himself as a composer, conductor and an accompanist. As well as composing, he has an active interest in musical direction. In January 2012 he was MD for Bath Spa University's production of his own musical, i.h.o.l.l.a.n.d., and in March 2012 he will be MDing their production of Sondheim's Into the Woods.
